Reducing emissions through the integration of modern high-performance battery systems into powertrains for rail, marine and other industrial systems is a key objective of the collaboration between engine manufacturer MTU Friedrichshafen, a Rolls-Royce Power Systems brand, and AKASOL. The Darmstadt-based technology company recently received the RRPS Innovation Supplier Award for the development and production of high-performance battery systems in the Rail & Marine sector, thanks to its successful cooperation on several projects.
AKASOL and Rolls-Royce Power Systems have been working in partnership on several projects since 2010. This cooperation has resulted in the MTU Hybrid PowerPack drivetrain: in regional trains on non-electrified lines the system helps reduce fuel consumption and consequently CO2 emissions by up to 25 percent through electric traction and the recovery of braking energy. Aside from the diesel engine, the core components of the diesel-electric hybrid system are AKASOL’s lithium-ion battery systems, which ensure low costs per kilometer during the vehicle's service life of eight years in real operation.
Power batteries must meet particularly high demands in rail traffic, given that large amounts of energy must be recovered during the short braking period. High performance is also necessary due to the acceleration of relatively heavy rail vehicles. In addition to special safety aspects, availability is also particularly demanding, as these trains must be operational for up to 18 hours a day. As underlined by the successful cooperation with Rolls-Royce Power Systems, AKASOL's liquid-cooling high-performance battery systems meet these requirements.
“Our goal is to continually develop and improve in proactive partnerships with our suppliers,” says Erik Manning, Executive Vice President Purchasing & Operations at Rolls-Royce Power Systems. This year 13 suppliers won the annual award, which has been presented for the 13th time. From the more than 1,000 suppliers, the best are honored for above-average performance and co-operative partnership. Quality and cost, as well as delivery reliability and commitment to environmental protection play a decisive role.
