Electric & Hybrid Marine World Expo 2019

CCN hybrid superyacht and beyond – AKASOL to present maritim advances at Electric & Hybrid Marine World Expo 2019

AKASOL will present a broad portfolio of high energy density battery systems at the Electric & Hybrid Marine World Expo 2019. Certified for automotive applications, the company’s fast-charging battery systems already power a range of prototype vessels including the brand new 31.2m Vanadis hybrid superyacht from Italian builder Cerri Cantieri Navali (CCN).

Vanadis, the first in CCN’s new ‘E-Prop’ line of hybrid propulsion motor yachts, is powered by traditional diesel engines and an electric engine, which are supported by generators and AKASOL’s AKASystem 15 OEM battery system. The vessel is capable of cruising short distances and anchoring under electric power, minimizing vibration, diesel exhaust pollution and noise during port calls or sleeping, all while cutting fuel costs. It reaches a maximum speed of 12.5 knots and an electric cruising peak of 8 knots, while the lithium-ion battery systems allow for zero-emission anchorage for up to 17 hours.

AKASOL is highly successful in the automotive sector. Its battery systems are used in the Mercedes-Benz eCitaro of Daimler subsidiary EvoBus, Alstom’s Coradia iLint hydrogen fuel cell train and also equip prototype vessels from Baltic Yachts and Sanlorenzo. AKASOL’s full range of automotive systems will obtain DNV GL marine certification in 2019. This gives the maritime market access to these flexible and fast-charging solutions, setting a new energy content benchmark for marine battery systems at competitive prices enabled by series development.

2nd Generation AKASystem OEM PRC approaches serial production

AKASOL will present the 2nd generation of the AKASystem OEM PRC at the expo. The first generation currently powers the new hybrid superyacht from CCN, the eCitaro and buses from a large Swedish manufacturer. Compared to the 1st generation, the 2nd generation will offer an energy increase of more than 33% The system can achieve charge rates of 2 C and be fast-charged. Currently in the test and validation process, the 2nd Generation AKASystem OEM PRC will be available at the end of 2019 before entering serial production for two major commercial vehicle customers in the middle of 2020.

AKARack marine system in final stages of series development

Another highlight for customers looking for hybrid- and full-electric marine applications will be the 48 V solution AKARack. The AKARack is a compact 19-inch battery system that can be used for various applications. It comes with 6.5 kWh energy, can achieve C-Rates of up to 2 C and has powerful thermal management supported by liquid cooling architecture. Since its debut at Electric & Hybrid Marine World Expo, the AKARack has entered serial development, with a release date for the standard and high-voltage solutions expected soon.

Better than solid-state-technology

The new AKASystem AKM CYC, AKASOL’s flagship automotive product, has also entered series development for the battery module and system. AKAModule CYC achieves a market-leading energy density of 221 Wh/kg with liquid cooled battery modules, which are scalable and can be integrated into various system designs at the pack level. For future shipping, ferry, tug and excursion boat applications, this would allow rapid charging from a scalable, highly-durable and compact system. With this technology, AKASOL is able to outperform today’s solid-state technology in terms of price competitiveness and availability, while increasing energy density between 30-40%. The company plans to bring the solution to series production in 2021 and already has customers starting sample operation by the end of this year.

Dr. Stefan Bergold, AKASOL’s Head of Sales, commented: „We apply the rigorous standards of the automotive industry to marine applications and are proud to offer the marine sector advanced lithium-ion battery solutions that set new industry benchmarks for energy density, price competitiveness and availability. Battery-powered yachts are only the beginning. We look forward to working with manufacturers across all types of marine applications and providing solutions to enable cleaner and quieter harbors and seas.”
